GILBERT CHARLES STUART (1755-1828) PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON Canvas, 23 3/4 inches by 29 1/4 inches BUST-PORTRAIT showing the right side of the face, turned three-quarters towards the spectator. The Father of his country here wears a reddish-brown velvet coat, similar to the one known to have belonged to Washington, now among the relics at Mount Vernon, Grayish-green curtain in background, with opening at right showing sky. This is probably one of the two portraits painted for Mr. J. Vaughan, referred to on page 91 of George C. Mason's Life and Works of Gilbert Stuart," where he says: "The other portrait of Washington, painted for J. Vaughan, and taken to England at the same time, Remained there, and there it probably may still be found." Described in Am. Mag. of Art, June, 1919.
