I am quite sure I have never seen a portrait altogether so charming as this one but you must remember that I have a great admiration for Erasmus and this no doubt greatly influences my enthusiasm. The expression is serene and dignified and the hands are almost lifelike. The picture seems to me to be in perfect condition. I am sure I have never seen fur painted as well. The general tone is brown and my recollection of the renaissance pillar behind him grey. The curtain is green ans conveys the idea of being light and delicate. The books and other accessories are just enough to complete the picture. I think sometimes that too many accessories detract from the portrait but this is not so here.

Mr. White naturally tried to impress me with the great value of the picture and the necessity for prompt action but I replied to him that this was not interesting to me as I did not know your intention in the matter at all but has only been asked as a friend to see the picture.
