I think the universal opinion of all the best cities is that it is an indubitable Holbein and probably one of he earliest pictures painted by him in England. It has a certain weight and solidity of modelling which Holbein lost later on. On the other hand the accessories havstruck out especially the work onstruck out of the gold SS chain is heavier and duller than the similar goldsmiths' work in later paintings.
The picture is at present overloaded? with old and dirty varnish and would become much improved by cleaning. There is astruck out ^an old crack in the panel down the middle crossing the face in parts, which has been repaired a long time ago. This could be restored better thanstruck out much better. The head and hand are admirable examples of Holbein and it must be considered as one of the most important examples attainable. I should say that is is in much
